ALABAMA PUBLIC SAFETY LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

The Alabama Fire College hosts the Alabama Public Safety Leadership Academy (APSLA) annually for public safety officials across the state of Alabama. The media relations class took place in Hoover, AL on November 18, 2022.

This class consisted of preparing public safety officials to deal with the media in crisis or disaster situations. The main part of the class was a mock press conference, where myself and five other students in the College of Communication & Information Sciences acted as the press. We asked questions to keep the students on their toes to ensure they would be prepared for any question.

We also gave tips and pointers after each press conference to discuss what we liked and what they could have done better from a journalism and public relations perspective. The class was a mutually beneficial opportunity, as myself and other C&IS students were able to practice the side of attending a press conference and coming up with questions on the fly; as well as the APSLA students practiced their skills with the media.
